If you take any medications on a regular basis or your children do, you know how easy it can be to accidentally miss a dose. Life is busy and any schedule change or interruption to your routine can temporarily throw you off track. Or if you are like many, sometimes you take a dose on “autopilot” then struggle to remember later if you actually took it or not. This happens to me more than I’d like to admit, especially in the mornings when I’m not yet fully caffeinated and have brain fog.
Did you know, only 50% of patients correctly follow their medication regimen and non-adherence causes a death every 4 minutes in the U.S. alone? Scary, huh? As a nurse, I know how important it is (and sometimes absolutely critical) to take your meds when they are due. Some medications can cause complications and worsened side effects if you miss too many doses, not to mention they will not be effectively serving their purpose if they are not taken. And accidentally overdosing because of taking a double dose due to forgetting a medication was already taken can be potentially dangerous. If you have multiple medications, to be taken at different times of the day, it can be even more difficult to keep up with what to take and when. That is why I love a very cool app I was recently introduced to that was designed to eliminate the hassle and stress of taking medications!
A few years ago, two brothers, Omri and Rotem Shor, were faced with their father’s dire medical condition after he accidentally took an extra dose of insulin. This frightening situation led the brothers to create something to help their father track his medication dosages and times. They developed the Medisafe App to help their father and millions of others who take daily medications adhere to their medication regimens.
The Medisafe App is available on iOS and Android and acts as a “virtual pillbox”. You simply download the free app, set up your profile and start adding your medications (or your child’s). Set the times of day each medication needs to be taken. The app not only gives you a list but also a visual pie chart of the day and night that shows the “pill” in each time frame. I take an OTC (over the counter) allergy medicine once a day each morning and a vitamin supplement twice a day. When it is time to take each medication, the app sends me a notification on my phone along with an audio alert (you do not have to use the audio alert if you choose not to) so I don’t forget. It will send another reminder every few minutes until you enter the app and mark your med as taken or if you need to, you can skip it or schedule it for a different time.
The Medisafe App is easy to use and can even make taking meds fun with it’s variety of “Medtones” audio reminders to choose from, including Star Wars characters, Elsa from Frozen, and even Dr. Evil and Austin Powers reminding you it is time to take your “groovy meds”! Never thought a medication reminder would make me laugh but these do! If you prefer, you can use alert tones found on your phone to remind you.
Another great feature of the app is the ability to have someone else be notified of your medication schedule and whether or not you are taking them. This is great for a teenager who may be responsible for his own meds but still needs some parental guidance and supervision. If you are a caregiver for your aging parent and help him or her with daily medications, this app can help both of you track it all with a handy weekly adherence report. It can even help you track doctor’s appointments and send info to your doctor if you wish. In addition to all this, the app can remind you of when it is time for your next refill and offers coupons for many different medications.
The Medisafe App is a great tool for anyone who takes medications or has a loved one who does and best of all, it is free! Even if you only need to take medications occasionally for a temporary illness, this app can help make the experience less stressful! Since I started using it a few weeks ago, I never have to worry about missing my doses or trying to remember if I already took one. Download it today!
